Kipps Allocations 1: North British Railway Tender Locomotives

Class J35

Variety was most certainly not the watchword with this class, as the same eight locomotives were allocated from late 1948 until the first withdrawals in 1959, and six of them were there in LNER days!

Class J37

The J37s were relative newcomers to the shed, the first two not arriving until 1951.  Further locomotives appeared in 1957 & 1959 eventually bringing the total to five. 64593 (right) was the last steam locomotive to be transferred to Kipps shed in 1961

Class J36

A total of 24 class J36s were allocated to Kipps from 1947 to 1962.  Members of the class were steadily being withdrawn since Nationalisation and a total of 10 locos had already been withdrawn as early as 1957. Some locomotives were hired out to local factories, details are given in the notes after the allocation tables

Naming Notes: Some members of this class were named after battlefields and commanders of World War 1.  The following names were carried by locomotives listed as being allocated to Kipps:
65216
Byng
65217
French
5223
Albert
5226
Haig
65236
Horne
The name was painted on the middle splasher, as can be seen in the photograph above of former Haymarket J36 No.65243 "Maude" as currently preserved by the Scottish Railway Preservation Society at Bo'ness.

Footnote - Just for a bit of fun!!
What a J35 would have looked like with coal sector decals and an Eastfield "Scotty Dog" shedplate.
