Kipps Allocation 3: LNER, LMS, Caledonian Railway & British Railways Steam Locomotives & BR Diesel Shunters

The Emergency Service of December 1960 - October 1961

Following the forced withdrawal of all electric passenger services on the 7th of December 1960, an emergency steam service was introduced and Kipps shed was naturally involved in this operation.  In addition to the V1/V3 transfers detailed in that section,  the following locomotives are recorded as having been commandeered for the emergency service and undoubtedly some would have been serviced at Kipps depot.

BR Standard 4MT 2-6-0 76090,76091 & 76095 from Corkerhill and 76113 from St. Rollox were transferred to Parkhead for the duration of the emergency timetable.
LMS 4MT 2-6-4T 42074,42233, 42462 42578 from the London Midland Region were allocated to Parkhead to replace that shed's allocation of V1/V3 tanks from February to November 1961.  42426 and 42664 were initially allocated to Parkhead but after only a few weeks were transferred to Kipps and were allocated as shown below.

Classes V1 & V3*

These powerful and well proportioned locomotives were the mainstay of passenger services between Airdrie and Glasgow from the 1930s until the eventual full introduction of the electric trains in 1960.

Notes:   The following V1s were delivered new to Kipps: 67613 Jul 1931, after running trials between Darlington and Saltburn from May 1931, 67621 Oct 1931, 67623 Nov 1931 & 67626 Dec 1931.  All four were transferred to Parkhead in Nov 1932
All of this class up to 67681 were initially built as class V1 and many later rebuilt to class V3.  67682 - 67691 were built new as class V3

Important Note: The above allocations and withdrawal dates have been thoroughly researched by Andrew Lait.  There is additional  information  in an article in the January 1995 edition of "Steam World" by R.N. Forsythe.   Correctly recorded are the transfers of 67605, 67618 & 67627 to Eastfield and 67660, 67665 & 67674 to St.Margarets but the article omits the transfers of 67609 and 67669.  67660 and 67665 are stated as having returned when the emergency steam service was introduced in December (67665 was the only loco not to have returned!).  Other V1/V3s reported as having been commandeered for this service were 67613 & 67648 from Ardrossan to Parkhead, 67679 Hurlford to Parkhead and  67617 & 67665 from St. Margarets, to Parkhead. with  67648 being later allocated to Kipps.

Class N2

The other LNER tank locomotive was generally not a favourite of Scottish crews and had a reputation for rough riding.  As such, they were mostly relegated to freight work and limited to a top speed of 25mph.

Stanier 4MT

With the "Blue Trains" laid up for rectification these locomotives were hastily transferred from the London Midland Region initially to Parkhead then to Kipps as cover for the emergency timetable.  Compared with the newer Fairburn design which was widely used on ex LMS routes in the district, the Stanier variety of these locomotives were fairly uncommon in Scotland, having not been allocated to Scottish sheds since the 1940s.. The staff at Kipps would surely have been delighted in 1956 to receive their allocation of the new moguls.  Built with ease of maintenance as a priority they would have made preparation and disposal a lot easier

Being very similar in appearance to the North British class Y9, the sole example of this Caledonian Railway design would not have appeared out of place at Kipps.  Indeed it was possibly drafted in from Dawsholm shed in 1959 to supplement the dwindling number of Y9s at Kipps, whose number had dropped to 5 by the end of that year.  It survived until the closure of the depot and is seen here dumped in 1963.  This engine retained the original CR flared chimney.

The first example of this class, designed as a dock tank with short wheelbase & high tractive effort, was 56172 which arrived in January 1952, it was the first "foreign" (i.e. non NBR/LNER loco to be allocated.  The second one 56161 (right) didn't last long at Kipps, as it arrived in November 1958 & was withdrawn the following month.  The powers that be must have been convinced that two were required though, and 56170 was sent from Yoker in December 1958.  A common nickname for these locomotives was "Beetlecrushers"

B.R.Standard 350hp Diesel Shunter (Class 08)

Kipps entered the diesel age in November 1957 with the arrival of  D3394 and D3395.  With two new locomotives & further locomotives transferred from other depots, the total allocation by the end of that year was seven.  Three more new locomotives arrived in September 1960 but stayed only for a few weeks.  June 1962 saw the last ever transfers to Kipps shed, with D3411 and D3412 coming from Yoker.              August 1962 saw the start of transfers away to other depots and by the end of the year all were officially re-allocated.  As mentioned in the opening page the shed remained open to diesels as a sub-shed of Eastfield until 6th November 1966 and a number of class 08s remained at Kipps until then.  Following the complete closure of the shed, Whifflet became the signing on point for crews and the centre sidings of Whifflet yard was used for stabling of diesel shunters.  When these sidings were lifted in 1973 the locomotives were stabled on the stub of the branch into R.B. Tennants, but this only lasted for a short while, as with the closure of the majority of freight depots and rail connected factories  there was virtually no work for locally stabled shunters.  One class 08 can usually still be found stabled in the area at the Freightliner terminal

Following withdrawal from Motherwell depot by British Rail in November 1983, 08736 (D3904) was sold to Deanside Transit.  Photographs used by kind permission of (left) David Lamb taken on 20/12/98 and (right)  Peter Harris taken on 22/09/92.
