Millerhill

Millerhill yard was one of the results of the 1955 Modernisation Plan, and was opened in 1960, however, like its contemporaries at, for example Kingmoor and Tinsley,  has suffered from the same imperfect foresight. As a result the yard today is considerably smaller than it originally was, and is in general used only as a staging point for MGR coal trains from various locations in Central Scotland to the North East.

The following photographs show the area changing following the closure of the "down" yard and the subsequent opening of Newcraighall Passenger station.

Biblography.
Some good photographs of the yard under construction can be found in "British Railways from the Air" and "The Waverly Route" and a full history of the yard is given in "British Railway Marshalling Yards" by

This is the view from the B6415 Old Craighall Road bridge.  The 198? view (top left) was taken just after the old Waverley line tracks adjacent to the yard had been removed, and a new route to the wagon repair facility established.  The 2005 view (top right) show the track still in place to the Bilston Glen Branch and the former site of the Electrification Depot.  THe road has been tarmaced and considerable tree growth has occurred in the intervening ?? years.
Looking South from the same bridge, the 198? photograph shows the electrification yard in
Whitehill Road.
